Staying True to Your Goals
by Kelly Chiang
When there is a lack of motivation, people turn to setting goals. This process generates inspiration as well as a sense of productivity. While setting goals is not actually tackling them, it is certainly one step closer to reaching the finish line.
While setting up these expectations can be difficult, sticking with your goals might be the hardest task within this process. When working on a project, countless obstacles can arise— whether it be time, money, or effort. This creates pressure and can cause people to lose sight of their goals. Consequently, they are unable to reach their full potential.
In times like these, it is crucial to take a step back and look at the overall picture. Perhaps imagine that you are still at the start of this project and think, would my past self be satisfied with the direction this is heading? If you reply yes, that’s great. Keep staying on your current track and you will reach your end goal in no time. If you answer no, perhaps you need to stop. Wherever you are in the process, simply stop and reflect. Think about your original intentions and trace to the specific time when they became lost. Something important to remember is that it is completely ok to restart. Ironically, this is a sign of progress! Rather than just getting the task done, you are now understanding your intentions and prioritizing your goals.
As a leader, it is your duty to also be checking up on your peers. If they are feeling discouraged, make sure to provide a listening ear and even words of advice. This can allow your connection to strengthen, and they will respect you more because of your empathy towards them.
