Archive: Let’s Stand Together
Today our hearts ache for George Floyd's family, and for all the other families who are mourning the loss of a loved one who has died from police brutality.
We feel this even more acutely as we feel the helplessness against the plague of Covid-19 as that roars invisibly through our communities, and particularly targets people of color.
As Maya Angelou said in the quote above, however, hate is never the solution.
It is going to take us all to change this. It is time each one of us finds our voice - and uses it.
It is heartening to see so many peaceful protests around the country. While it is also understandable to see the violence and the looting because there is so much rage, anguish and feelings of helplessness, that is not the solution either.
Let us not give in to negative feelings. Let us instead acknowledge them, turn them around, and put our feelings to good use: Listen to the pain. Give comfort with your presence. Take action to ensure that reform finally happens.
As long as our government continues to allow police brutality, our communities will continue to suffer. We must act, and continue taking action until we have people in power who are true leaders, leaders who value the life of each and every one of us, leaders whose interest is in a city/state/country that works for each and every one of us, with no-one left out.
YOU can make a difference. Our Representatives want to hear from us.
Send emails. Make phone calls. Send postcards to your local officials, to your state Representatives, and to your federal Representatives. Make your voice heard. 100 years ago it took just one vote that made the difference to finally give women the right to vote. One man who said yes. One man who listened to his mother. Your voice is needed. Your voice makes a difference.
If you are not registered to vote, don't put it off, register today. When it is time to vote, use your vote - that is your voice. It is all of us together that make things happen - all of us - 1+1+1+1.... Join us. Please, add your voice.
