Book Review: Surprise

Penguin Random House: Surprise

Before reading Surprise, by Tania Luna and LeeAnn Renninger, Ph.D., I never thought about the importance of the unexpected – but the element of surprise can turn an ordinary moment into a meaningful experience.

Falling into a routine, whether it’s work or your personal life, is easy and comfortable. But routines rarely provide big leaps in growth or pleasure. To realize something important, knock you out of your comfort zone, or push you to grow, surprise may be the missing component.

Leaders can learn a lot from Luna and Renninger. Luna has given multiple TEDx Talks and works with companies to provide leadership training. Renninger is an expert in leadership development and implementing new ideas. Together they love the element of surprise and using it to enhance lives. They may have figured out the hidden secret of vulnerability.

Anyone who studies leadership knows that showing vulnerability can help build trust. I always thought being vulnerable worked because it made leaders more relatable, but after reading Surprise, I understand that it’s the unexpected part of vulnerability that matters. We don’t expect leaders to admit they were wrong or ask for help – so it’s a powerful trust-builder when they do.

One of the best books I’ve read in the last year, Surprise will teach you how to use the unexpected to enhance your life and leadership.
